The Joy of Giving: A Volunteer's Perspective (Part Three)

I decided to volunteer because I kept reading about the overwhelming need for foster care organization support in Oklahoma City, and sensed a call from God. I've been a volunteer with The Anna's House Foundation for nine months. My responsibilities began with calling references for prospective foster families; now I organize the resource room and help with occasional events. My most rewarding experience thus far has been getting to know the AHF team and seeing the families show up at the Christmas party with their foster children.

To anyone thinking about starting volunteer work, I would like to say that there is almost always something that needs doing! However, it's important to know that it is not “glamorous” all of the time because there are times it feels like it doesn’t matter, but it does. My volunteer experience has helped me begin to know a part of Oklahoma City that I wouldn’t otherwise, and it has helped me have perspective on my own problems and understand more in the global sense—specifically how to pray for everyone involved in foster care.
